Here at ICE, we investigate frauds and thefts just like this. The best way to keep yourself safe this holiday season from gift card fraud is to make sure you buy it from a major retailer inside their store or on their official website.
What you can also do is make sure you get cards that aren't tampered with, that haven't had the PIN number removed, and also if you can buy the ones that are behind the counter. Let the cashier help you. If you do receive a gift card this season, you want to go ahead and use that gift card as soon as possible.
You also want to make sure you keep that information to yourself. You don't share with any scammers online or if you get any phone calls. Unless you initiate a call with the retailer, you want to keep that information private.
