On September 11th, 2001, I was a sophomore in college at Iona University. I was a member of the rowing team and we had practice at 5:30 that morning. I remember that morning vividly.
It was a beautiful day. There was not a cloud in the sky, the sun was high, and there was no wind. I recall walking out of my dorm room and bumping into a friend who asked me if I had seen that somebody flew a plane into the World Trade Center.
And my immediate reaction was, "How did you miss those buildings? They're so big." For me, the terrorist attacks were personal. My dad worked at the US Customs Service 6 World Trade Center.
He survived the 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center and at the time, I didn't know where he was. I was in a pre-chiropractics program, but the events of 9/11 changed my path immensely. I had an overwhelming sense and an overwhelming call to public service.
My very first federal job was reviewing financial transactions concerned with terrorist financing. And for me, that was a full circle moment. From the fear and the sorrow and the anger felt on the days of the terrorist attacks, I was in a position to help prevent another terrorist attack from happening.
