Mississippi Senate Race Too Close to Call
As of November 4, 2026, Democrat Scott Colom and Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith were separated by a few dozen to about 2,000 votes in Mississippi's Senate race, and ballots were still being counted.
Who covered it: 22 US outlets, 6 international, 1 wire service.

What happened
- Polls closed Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Mississippi. By Wednesday morning, with about 96% of votes counted, Democrat Scott Colom led Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by dozens of votes (43 in several tallies, 65 in others), and both said they were confident of winning. HuffPost, Alaska's News Source
- Mississippi counts mail ballots postmarked by Election Day if received within five business days (by Nov. 10), and affidavit (provisional) ballots from voters whose eligibility is in question. Counties must certify by Nov. 13. Estimates of outstanding ballots ranged from about 3,300–3,600 mail ballots to 15,000–20,000 in total, and officials said the exact number was unclear. CBS News, NPR
- Mississippi has no automatic recount; a challenger would need a court order, and NBC quoted a law professor saying state law offers no mechanism to contest a U.S. Senate general election. The state's mail-ballot deadline was upheld 5-4 by the Supreme Court earlier in the year. NBC News, Washington Examiner
- Both sides sent lawyers. Elias Law Group and the DSCC said they were working for Colom, and the Mississippi GOP said it had more than 50 attorneys and observers. On Thursday the NRSC and Hyde-Smith campaign asked all 82 counties to separate and preserve affidavit ballots, and Colom's campaign called it a "desperate stunt" and told counties the request has no basis in state law. KCCI
- Colom's lead grew through the week, from 43 votes on Wednesday to about 1,100 and then 1,700–1,800 on Thursday, over 2,000 on Friday, and 2,734 in Decision Desk HQ's tally on Friday evening. Outlets had not called the race, and Mississippi GOP chair Mike Hurst said the party would accept a Colom win if the law was followed. The Hill, CBS News
- Sources gave different reasons for the close race. Several cited Black voter turnout and anger over the Supreme Court's Voting Rights Act ruling, cost-of-living messaging, and Hyde-Smith's "pick another protein" remark. The Hill reported swings in red counties like DeSoto, and a Republican party official told The Federalist most outstanding ballots came from Republican-leaning areas. NPR, The Federalist
- Alaska's Senate race was also uncalled. Democrat Mary Peltola led incumbent Republican Dan Sullivan by 637 votes with an estimated 74% counted, with ranked-choice tabulation possible and a final count Nov. 18. A second candidate named Dan Sullivan drew about 1.7%, and Trump posted that votes for him and another minor candidate "should be immediately given to the REAL Dan Sullivan." UPI, RTÉ News
- Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, with at least 54 Senate seats and more than 250 House seats in some counts. Republicans including Vance blamed the Iran war, and Trump said the party's losses came because he was not on the ballot. The Daily Beast, NZ Herald

A historic upset powered by Black turnout and economic anger
Only US outlets told it this way.
This telling treats Colom's near-win as a shift in the South driven by Black voters, backlash to the Voting Rights Act ruling and cost-of-living concerns. It stresses the history of a first Black senator since Reconstruction and a first Democrat since 1982.
