For schools and colleges
Student data agreement
Between Semblen LLC ("Semblen"), Austin, Texas, and the school or college named below (the "School"), for the use of semblen.com by the teacher named below with their students.
- Purpose. The teacher uses Semblen to teach media literacy: students analyze published articles, public statements, advertisements and their own writing, and discuss the results.
- No student accounts. Semblen does not require students to create an account or to give a name, email address or student ID number.
- What Semblen stores. For each analysis: the text analyzed, the results, the link, the time, the IP address and the browser's user-agent. Semblen deletes these after 180 days. Semblen does not collect education records: no names, rosters, grades, student ID numbers or assignments.
- How Semblen uses it. Only to provide the service, keep it working and secure, and evaluate and improve its detection model, as its privacy policy (semblen.com/privacy) describes. Text kept as a model example is separated from the IP address and browser details. Text analyzed through a teacher's class link is never used to train or evaluate our model.
- What Semblen will not do. Sell personal data; show advertising or share data for advertising; build profiles of students; use student data to market to students.
- Service providers. Semblen shares data only with the service providers that run the analysis, as listed in its privacy policy, each bound by its own terms. Semblen's servers, and the data it stores, are in Germany.
- Deletion. On a written request from the teacher or the School to [email protected], Semblen deletes what it can find of the class's analyses within one month. Analyses are not linked to accounts, so the request should say roughly when and what was analyzed.
- Security. Data is encrypted in transit and stored on servers only Semblen administers. If Semblen learns that data from the class was accessed without authorization, it tells the teacher and the School without undue delay.
- FERPA. Semblen does not receive personally identifiable information from students' education records under this use. The teacher will ask students not to put their own or others' personal details in text they analyze.
- Age. Students using Semblen are at least 13, as Semblen's terms require.
- Term. This agreement lasts while the teacher uses Semblen with students. Either side may end it in writing; clause 7 still applies after it ends. Semblen's privacy policy governs anything this agreement doesn't cover.
