Daniel Rosen, U .S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota. Gentlemen, welcome to our coverage. Good morning to you. Good morning. Thank you. As it was just pointed out by our reporter, Garrett Tenney, there, this started back in 2024. What he wanted to do, his parents came here in the early 2000s, naturalized citizens around 2017, 2018. He wanted to go join the battle in Somalia when he could not raise the money for an airplane ticket. That's when he started looking for a gun here in the U .S. Mr. Rosen, do I have That's when he started looking for a gun here in the U .S. that correct so far? You do so far. Okay. And so your agents kept in touch with him. You had multiple contact with him. And I understand he sent a video where he pledged allegiance to ISIS. Have you seen that? And what was that message about? He has pledged allegiance to ISIS, As you can see in the criminal complaint, he pledged it. He stated repeatedly his intention. as you can see in the criminal. First, his desire, as you said, Bill, to go to Somalia and fight there. And when he didn't have the resources to do that, to just kill a bunch of white people are essentially the words that he spoke or wrote, I should say, to what he didn't know was an FBI undercover agent. and he progressed along the way and made sure that he was going to be able to do this, made firm plans, said he was 100 % committed to those plans, and when FBI made the determination that this person really was serious about carrying it out, they made sure to disrupt those plans, intervene in an arrest. Let's listen to the Homeland Security Secretary, Mark Wayne Mullin. Welcome to the Homeland Security Secretary, Mark Wayne Mullin. This is a one -off, but this is an area that we are constantly paying attention to. There's many areas across the country where we chase leads down every single day. This is an area that was a lone wolf, but we were able to understand his pattern. That's just one area that we see severe radicalization taking place. It's not just in sanctuary cities and sanctuary states that you had this radicalization, but you see it more often in these areas. I'm curious if you have any idea of whether he was being instigated by somebody overseas. Well, we are not making that allegation at this point, Dana, but the investigation does continue. Right now, we try our best at an early stage in a prosecution to stay within the allegations that we're making. And Chris, do you think that this is a one -off? Well, I could tell you this much. Defending the homeland still remains a top priority for this FBI, and this here is a perfect example of the strength of our partnerships and the effectiveness of our joint terrorism task forces. And so this was not done by one agent or one agency alone. it requires a lot of intelligence support, analysts, and professional staff to get in and identify these threats early enough to where we can mitigate them and have the successful outcomes like we've experienced this week. It requires a lot of intelligence support. Gentlemen, to both of you, he was planning this for the 24th of October. That's a Saturday. That was done with intent because he knew the mall would be crowded on a Saturday. To both of you, how much of an issue do you see arising in Minnesota today on similar matters? Well, look, radicalization is a very serious issue. Well, look, radicalization is a very serious problem. What this does show is that there do continue to be people who want to go and fight the fight with ISIS and with other foreign terrorist organizations. And thankfully, we have agencies like Chris's, the FBI, that are keeping their eye. And this is a great story of FBI monitoring and having their eyes on the radicalized population so that they can see when someone really is actually progressing so that they can see when someone is... toward becoming a real true threat. And when they do reach that point where they're a true threat, FBI is there, they intervene, they arrest, and we prosecute. Chris, what's the next step here? Well, the next steps in this case would be for the jujitsu process to play out, and that would really fall in the hands of the United States Attorney's Office, so I would defer. Christopher, do you see a problem in that community? I can tell you that nationwide we've got terrorism cases and similar instances like this in every field office is AOR. And so this is not specific to just this community. But we are certainly keeping our eye on the ball. As I mentioned, this is our top priority. Okay. All right. Gentlemen, thank you.
