Where they stand
In their own words, from their campaign website, summarised in plain English.
Economy and cost of living
Haaland says lowering costs is her number one priority. She says she would raise the minimum wage to a living wage, ban AI-driven rent fixing, cut red tape to build more housing, waive grocery permitting fees in food deserts, and open an Office of Small Business.
“Lowering costs is my number one priority.”
Taxes and government spending
Haaland says she would increase the Child Tax Credit and expand the Working Families Tax Credit. She also says she would use state budget surpluses to fill Medicaid gaps.
Health care
Haaland says she would protect Medicaid, provide Medicaid for all kids, and work toward public coverage for all New Mexicans through a public option. She also says she would address the doctor and nurse shortage, rein in drug prices and Pharmacy Benefit Managers, and limit private equity ownership of local healthcare markets.
Social Security and Medicare
No stated position on their website.
Immigration and the border
Haaland says she would limit ICE coordination with state and local resources, ban ICE agents from wearing masks, require them to identify their agency, and bar ICE from operating within 500 yards of schools, courthouses, churches, healthcare facilities and parks. She supports New Mexico's ban on ICE detention centers and says she wants more judges and officials to process immigration cases.
Abortion
Haaland says that as governor she would step in to offset any loss of federal funding to Planned Parenthood. In Congress she co-sponsored the Woman's Health Protection Act to establish a statutory right to provide and receive abortion care.
Energy and climate
Haaland says she would invest in more renewable energy to create jobs and lower utility costs, aiming to make New Mexico the energy capital of the country. She also backs a data center moratorium and a water plan that includes modernizing groundwater management, expanding stormwater capture, and cleaning up PFAS, abandoned uranium mines and oil and gas wells.
Guns
Haaland says she would give law enforcement the tools and technology to get guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.
Crime and policing
Haaland says she would focus on stopping violent crime and drug trafficking by giving law enforcement more tools and technology. She also says she would create an Office of Community Safety staffed with social workers and counselors, expand violence prevention programs, and favor treatment and recovery over incarceration for addiction.
“As Governor, I will focus every day on stopping violent crime, getting guns and drugs off our streets, and addressing the root causes of crime.”
Education
Haaland says she would teach kids to read earlier, expand universal childcare, and create statewide Community Schools with services like counseling and health care. She also says she would expand career pathways starting in middle school, expand the Opportunity Scholarship to free tuition including graduate education, and modernize school facilities.
