Where they stand
In their own words, from their campaign website, summarised in plain English.
Economy and cost of living
Johnson says he would create a labor advisory council to recommend a state minimum wage, remove certain barriers to employment and fight wage theft. He also says he would fund grants for cities to convert existing buildings into affordable housing and require the state to produce at least 25% of its own food, energy and water.
Taxes and government spending
Johnson says he wants to raise the share of South Carolina families paying no income tax from 40% to 70%, rather than eliminate the income tax. He says he would work with municipalities to reduce property taxes for working families.
“Jermaine’s plan is to increase the amount of families who are not paying income tax to 70%.”
Health care
Johnson says he would fund the opening of more rural hospitals across South Carolina. He also says he would make medicinal marijuana legal and accessible, and that he wrote a bill for basic mental health training for school, religious and community leaders.

He also says he would commute the sentences of prisoners with non-violent marijuana charges and pass a state hate crimes law.
Education
Johnson says he would audit the state's public education system and then use the results to give every child access to a quality education. He also says he would increase focus and funding for trade schools and tech academies, based on the Lower Richland Tech Academy he funded.
