Where they stand
In their own words, from their campaign and official websites, summarised in plain English.
Economy and cost of living
Lamont says he wants to keep lowering costs for working families, with a focus on childcare, healthcare, housing and education. He says he will also expand universal pre-K and childcare and strengthen paid family leave protections.
Taxes and government spending
Lamont says he has delivered the largest middle-class income tax cut in state history, balanced budgets every year without raising taxes, and ended state income tax on pension and retirement income. He says his healthcare plan strengthens the system without raising taxes on residents or small businesses.
Health care
Lamont says he wants to lower prescription drug costs, expand coverage through the Connecticut Option, and strengthen preventative and mental healthcare. His Fair Share Healthcare plan would require large employers to contribute up to $1,000 per employee enrolled in HUSKY (Medicaid), and he says he will explore moves toward universal affordable healthcare.
Social Security and Medicare
Lamont says he has eliminated state income taxes on pension and retirement income and extended tax relief to Social Security recipients, saving seniors $40 million a year. He also points to a $25 monthly cap on insulin costs.
Immigration and the border
Lamont says he expanded the state's TRUST Act with stronger legal protections for immigrants, including the right to sue when rights are violated. He says he barred federal agents like ICE from wearing masks or making warrantless arrests inside state courthouses.
Abortion
Lamont says he protects abortion and reproductive freedom, and he signed a law shielding abortion providers and patients from out-of-state legal attacks. He also expanded the range of qualified providers who can deliver abortion-related services.
Energy and climate
Lamont says he wants a 100% zero-carbon electric grid by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050, with more solar, wind, geothermal, energy efficiency and electrification. He also wants to lower electricity bills by requiring affordability to be considered in utility profits and strengthening oversight of utilities.
Guns
Lamont says he has signed gun violence prevention laws, including measures cracking down on ghost guns, banning open carry and expanding safe storage requirements.
Crime and policing
Lamont says he passed the Clean Slate Law, which automatically clears low-level criminal records to give people a second chance.
Education
Lamont says he wants to increase state support for special education, expand universal pre-K and affordable childcare, and continue free school meals. He says he has fully funded the state's school funding formula and doubled special education funding.
Foreign policy and defense
No stated position on their website.
Elections and ethics in government
Lamont says he has signed legislation protecting voting rights, and he notes that everyone in Connecticut can vote by mail.
