Read this before comparing the sides. Ads that attack an opponent use these techniques far more often than ads that introduce a candidate, whoever runs them, so the side running more attack ads shows a higher share. A technique is about wording, not about whether an ad is true. These are online ads only (Meta and YouTube), not television.
How a group is placed: by its own filings with the Federal Election Commission. A group is with a candidate when it reported spending to support that candidate, or to oppose the other one in the general election. The parties' own committees are with their nominee. Spending against a candidate in a primary places a group nowhere, and neither does our reading of its ads: a group with no such filing is listed as not placed. The sponsor table gives the reason for each.
Decide what counts
Not everyone would call every technique a problem. Untick the ones you'd call ordinary persuasion and the count updates.
48% of the 27 ads here use at least one of the techniques ticked below (13 ads).
Leaving out the softer ones (loaded language, glittering generalities, slogans, exaggeration, repetition): 22% of ads.

Money in this race
From FEC filings for 2025–26. Outside spending is money a group spends on its own about a candidate — TV and online ads, mail, canvassing. It is not a donation to the campaign, and the candidate does not control it. Supporting means it was spent to help that candidate win; Opposing means it was spent to defeat them, usually on attack ads. Groups report it within 24 or 48 hours as the election nears. Raised is the campaign's own fundraising, as of its latest quarterly report. Largest donors come from each outside spender's own FEC receipts, with each donor's share of its itemized receipts; donors under $100,000 are not named. People are shown with the employer and occupation they reported. A donor that is itself a political committee is shown with its own largest donors. Companies and nonprofits don't report their funders to the FEC, so the trail ends there, and the page says so.

Most jobs in our district are small business jobs. In Washington's 8th District, 62.8% of employees work for a small business, well above the statewide share of 48.7%, according to the SBA Office of Advocacy.
As a small business owner, I know how hard it is to start and grow a business. In Congress, I'll work to:
• Make SBA loans easier to get, with faster approvals, less paperwork and stronger microloans for entrepreneurs outside big financial centers
• Cut unnecessary regulations
• Simplify the tax code so owners don't need a team of accountants to know what they owe
• Support all-of-the-above energy, including hydropower, to keep costs down
This isn't a partisan issue. I'll work with anyone who's serious about it.

In March 2020, the week dining rooms across Washington closed, my restaurant crew and our neighbors fed about 600 people for free.
I'm Spencer Meline. I was born and raised in Edmonds, grew up climbing and hiking in the Cascades, and today my wife and I are raising our four kids in Cashmere. I'm a small business owner.
When the shutdown hit, my business partner and I used what we had at Wildflour, the restaurant we owned near Lake Wenatchee. Our crew volunteered their time to make family meal kits. Neighbors donated food. Volunteer firefighters handed out kits at the Plain fire station. The Wenatchee World wrote about it.
That's how I'd do this job: less division, more people solving problems together.
Where you start shouldn't decide where you end up. If you work hard, you should have a shot at starting a business, buying a home and building a life here. In Congress, I'll work to:
- Cut red tape for small businesses
- Make a first home reachable with a first-time homebuyer tax credit
- Protect our wilderness and manage our forests to reduce wildfire risk
This is my first run for office. I've taken no PAC money, and I'll work with anyone who's serious about fixing these problems.
Ballots are due by 8 p.m. Tue., Nov. 3. Use a drop box, or mail it postmarked by Nov. 3.

“Congress needs more of that — solutions for all Americans. The doctor is in. Send Schrier back to Congress.”
I am honored to once again earn the endorsement of The Seattle Times to represent Washington’s Eighth District.
I remain committed to thoughtfully representing this 10,000 square mile district - whether that means fighting health insurance CEOs to bring down your insurance costs, standing against this administration’s corruption, or standing up for our farmers. I’ll keep fighting for you. #WA08 #waelex

In Congress, I’m fighting for a more affordable America that supports hardworking families - not billionaires. My agenda is simple:
✅ Lower the cost of groceries, gas & housing
✅ Expand affordable and accessible healthcare
✅ Hold Trump and his administration accountable for corruption

This week’s #SCOTUS decision is a big win for Washingtonians and our democracy.
Time and time again our state’s mail-in voting system has proved safe, secure, and is especially important to my rural constituents who live far away from in-person voting options.

Today’s ruling enables billionaire donors and dark money interests who want to force more of their radical agenda and corruption into our nation’s electoral system.
American voters deserve better. I'll keep fighting for free and fair elections.
Loaded Language: Emotionally charged words like 'radical agenda' and 'corruption' frame the ruling's beneficiaries negatively without specifics.
Name Calling: Labels donors and interests with derogatory terms like 'radical' and 'corruption' to discredit them rather than address arguments.
Glittering Generalities: Vague, emotionally positive appeal that sounds noble but names no specific issue or policy. Flagged: “American voters deserve better”.

Republicans pushed through another reckless budget package that does nothing to lower costs for working families.
Instead it sends $70 billion more to ICE and CBP with no reforms to curb their lawlessness, and does nothing to permanently block the creation of Trump’s ballroom or slush fund that will funnel taxpayer dollars to January 6th felons.
I voted NO on this, because #WA08 deserves better.
An ad is on this page because its own "Paid for by" line is a campaign in this race; or it comes from a national Senate group and ran mostly in WA; or it ran mostly in WA and names a candidate — unless its sponsor is a campaign for some other office. Ads from outside groups appear alongside the campaigns' own.
Campaigns run one text as many separate ads. Identical text from the same sponsor is one card here, marked with its number of variants.
A technique is a specific rhetorical move in the wording, found by our model and explained in one line. It is not a claim that the ad is false.
Claims are checked when a reader asks: press "Check this ad's claims" on a card. Running a check and seeing its verdicts are part of Semblen Pro, because each check costs money to run; anyone can see which claims an ad makes. The ten ads with the most money behind them in each race are checked ahead of time.
Claim verdicts say what the cited sources say. A verdict that an ad is wrong or misleading is shown only when it cites an established fact-checker or an institutional record — Congress, a federal agency, a court — and its confidence is not low; a weaker one is not shown at all. Each verdict shows what it rests on and how confident it is. If we got one wrong, press Disagree: a verdict that readers dispute and no one defends comes down.
Video ads come from the campaigns' own YouTube channels; the transcript is analyzed. Meta ads are analyzed on their text; their video and images are not, yet.
