Loaded Language
Loaded Language: words picked for the feeling, not the facts.
How to spot it
Look for a word that carries a verdict where a plain word would do. "Regime" instead of "government", "scheme" instead of "plan", "thugs" instead of "protesters", "slashed" instead of "cut". The loaded word tells you how to feel before you have the facts.
A quick test: swap in the neutral word and see whether the sentence still says the same thing. If the facts survive and only the feeling is gone, the original word was doing the persuading.
What doesn't count
Strong words about a real harm aren't loaded when they describe it accurately. "It is killing people today" or "an alarming pattern" is emphatic argument, not a device. Neither is a charged subject: an article about war, immigration or abortion can be written in perfectly plain words.
A party's own name, "Republican" or "Democratic Socialist", is just a name. Labels like "far-left" or "radical", used as the writer's own description where a neutral term exists, are loaded.
Real examples
