Money in this race

Candidates for governor report their fundraising to Idaho's state campaign-finance office, not the FEC. This page doesn't cover those reports yet, so it shows no money figures.

The government should not write blank checks with your taxpayer dollars. Idaho’s Constitution requires a balanced budget; our Legislature has turned that requirement into a technicality. Last year the Idaho Legislature wasted 2 months approving billions in spending and passing major tax cuts, before they finally decided on a budget. You don’t balance your household budget by spending before you know what you have, so why would we let our state run that way? Fiscal priorities must be set. We cannot spend money on backroom deals while ignoring the rising cost of living, our Constitutional responsibility to fund schools, and paying our state police for the difficult work they do.
Loaded Language16.7% of sentences flagged

Loaded Language: The phrase 'blank checks' is an emotionally charged idiom implying reckless, unlimited, unaccountable spending, designed to trigger fiscal anxiety rather than describe a specific policy — for example: blank checks

A lot has changed since this photo, but one of the biggest things? How affordable it is to live in Idaho. Idahoans now pay the highest sales tax on groceries in the country. Our housing costs are second highest in the nation when compared with our income. We need policies that help people thrive. We need a legislature that doesn’t create barriers for cities and counties in their efforts to make Idaho more affordable. #StegnerforIdaho

Nuclear waste is headed to Idaho. Join me in demanding accountability. Call Governor Little and tell him to stop this deal. Gov. Little's Office: (208) 334-2100 Script: Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I am a resident of [Your Town/City]. I am calling to demand that Governor Little press pause on any new nuclear waste agreements or waivers with the federal government. The 1995 Settlement Agreement promised that our state would not become a default dumping ground for spent nuclear fuel. Bringing in waste that remains hazardous for thousands to billions of years puts our environment and the Snake River Plain Aquifer at risk. There is no clear guarantee it will leave the state and no assurance that there will be benefits to Idahoans that outweigh the almost limitless costs. I urge the Governor to stop these agreements, require full transparency, and protect Idaho's clean water and land. Thank you. --- With the national debt at $40 trillion, we should be skeptical of any promises of monetary support for this deal from the federal government. They would also likely require Idaho to accept liability for the radioactive waste, which could bankrupt our state.

Our schools are underfunded, our teachers are underpaid, and rural districts are left relying on levies which fail year after year. And yet, our governor decided to siphon off millions of dollars from our public schools despite a majority of voters voicing their dissent. Not only did he ignore the more than 30,000 Idahoans who asked him to veto the bill, Governor Little ignored the constitutional duty we have to Idaho students.

Today, I officially launched my campaign for Governor of Idaho. Over the past few months, I've traveled across our state listening to thousands of Idahoans—around kitchen tables, in coffee shops, on park benches and in communities big and small. No matter where I went, I kept hearing the same thing. People love Idaho. But they're worried we're beginning to lose what has always made this place special. Like so many of you, I'm disappointed that the people elected to listen, solve problems and serve Idaho aren't showing up in the way they should. If you truly love a place like Idaho, there comes a moment when you have to decide whether you'll simply watch what's happening—or whether you'll step up and do something about it. For me, that moment is now. Idaho is worth fighting for, and I'd be honored to have you join me.

Flag-Waving: Patriotic, religious, or in-group identity invoked to validate a position.

Slogans: Catchy phrase used to compress a complex position into an emotionally loaded shorthand.

Appeal to Fear: The sentence creates mild anxiety about losing something cherished, implying a threat to a valued way of life without specifying what is being lost — for example: 'lose what has always made this place special'

Glittering Generalities: The phrase 'what has always made this place special' is vague and emotionally positive, invoking a sense of heritage and identity without specifying any concrete meaning — for example: 'what has always made this place special'

Black-and-White Fallacy: The sentence presents only two options — passively watching or stepping up to act — ignoring the many other possible responses one might have, forcing a binary choice — for example: "whether you'll simply watch what's happening—or whether you'll step up and do something about it".

Appeal to Prejudice: The phrase 'If you truly love a place like Idaho' invokes in-group identity and loyalty to a specific place, implying that real love for Idaho demands a particular action — for example: 'If you truly love a place like Idaho'

False Urgency: The phrase 'there comes a moment when you have to decide' creates a sense of an imminent, unavoidable decision point that pressures the reader to act rather than deliberate carefully — for example: 'there comes a moment when you have to decide'

What this page is

  • An ad is on this page because its own "Paid for by" line is a campaign in this race; or it ran mostly in ID and names a nominee for governor — unless its sponsor is a campaign for some other office (a U.S. Senate or House campaign included), or it also names ID's Senate nominees, in which case it is on the Senate race's page. Ads from outside groups appear alongside the campaigns' own.
  • The candidates are the ones certified for the November ballot, from the source linked at the top. Governors are state offices, so there are no FEC filings behind this page: no money figures, and outside groups are placed on a side only when they are a campaign or a party committee.
  • Campaigns run one text as many separate ads. Identical text from the same sponsor is one card here, marked with its number of variants.
  • A technique is a specific manipulative move in the wording, found by our model and explained in one line. It is not a claim that the ad is false.
  • Claims are checked when a reader asks: press "Check this ad's claims" on a card. The check runs once and its result is shown to everyone afterwards. The ten ads with the most money behind them in each race are checked ahead of time.
  • Claim verdicts say what the cited sources say. A verdict that an ad is wrong or misleading is shown only when it cites an established fact-checker or an institutional record — Congress, a federal agency, a court — and its confidence is not low; a weaker one is not shown at all. Each verdict shows what it rests on and how confident it is. If we got one wrong, press Disagree: a verdict that readers dispute and no one defends comes down.
  • Video ads come from the campaigns' own YouTube channels; the transcript is analyzed. Meta ads are analyzed on their text; their video and images are not, yet.
