Decide what counts

Not everyone would call every technique manipulation. Untick the ones you'd call ordinary persuasion and the count updates.

Money in this race

Candidates for governor report their fundraising to Massachusetts's state campaign-finance office, not the FEC. This page doesn't cover those reports yet, so it shows no money figures.

“I feel lucky to have Dave as my State Representative. He is one of the hardest working progressive legislators in our state, and we’ve collaborated to make great achievements including: offering free community college; creating the immigrant legal defense fund; and investments in fair & affordable housing. Please join me in voting for him on September 1st!” - Governor Maura Healey.

The PROTECT Act is the law! Massachusetts now has some of the strongest immigrant protections in the country. Today, Governor Maura Healey signed this historic bill into law at La Colaborativa, a fantastic organization led by President and CEO, Gladys Vega, serving the Massachusetts’ immigrant community. I was honored to stand alongside my colleagues, including members of the Black and Latino Caucus, Andy X. Vargas and Judith García Let’s be clear: America is a land of immigrants. Yet, the cruel and incompetent Trump administration threatens and denies the constitutional rights of immigrants and US citizens alike. Massachusetts has taken a stand!! With your support and collaboration, I was involved in crafting this sweeping legislation, which specifically included a bill filed by me and Christine Barber for State Senate, the Dignity Not Deportations Act. Now part of the PROTECT Act, this measure prohibits Massachusetts law enforcement agencies from entering into cooperation agreements with federal immigration authorities and keeping state and local police out of federal civil immigration enforcement. It is a cornerstone of the new law.

Loaded Language: Emotionally charged words chosen to trigger a reaction rather than convey facts. — for example: cruel and incompetent Trump administration.

Name Calling: Derogatory labels used to discredit a person or group rather than address their arguments. — for example: cruel and incompetent Trump administration.

Appeal to Fear: The claim that the administration 'threatens and denies the constitutional rights of immigrants and US citizens alike' creates anxiety about broad civil liberties violations affecting everyone — for example: 'threatens and denies the constitutional rights of immigrants and US citizens alike'

Glittering Generalities: The phrase 'taken a stand' is vague and emotionally positive, invoking a sense of noble resistance without specifying what concrete actions were taken — for example: 'Massachusetts has taken a stand!!'

What this page is

  • An ad is on this page because its own "Paid for by" line is a campaign in this race; or it ran mostly in MA and names a nominee for governor — unless its sponsor is a campaign for some other office (a U.S. Senate or House campaign included), or it also names MA's Senate nominees, in which case it is on the Senate race's page. Ads from outside groups appear alongside the campaigns' own.
  • The candidates are the ones certified for the November ballot, from the source linked at the top. Governors are state offices, so there are no FEC filings behind this page: no money figures, and outside groups are placed on a side only when they are a campaign or a party committee.
  • Campaigns run one text as many separate ads. Identical text from the same sponsor is one card here, marked with its number of variants.
  • A technique is a specific manipulative move in the wording, found by our model and explained in one line. It is not a claim that the ad is false.
  • Claims are checked when a reader asks: press "Check this ad's claims" on a card. The check runs once and its result is shown to everyone afterwards. The ten ads with the most money behind them in each race are checked ahead of time.
  • Claim verdicts say what the cited sources say. A verdict that an ad is wrong or misleading is shown only when it cites an established fact-checker or an institutional record — Congress, a federal agency, a court — and its confidence is not low; a weaker one is not shown at all. Each verdict shows what it rests on and how confident it is. If we got one wrong, press Disagree: a verdict that readers dispute and no one defends comes down.
  • Video ads come from the campaigns' own YouTube channels; the transcript is analyzed. Meta ads are analyzed on their text; their video and images are not, yet.
