Josh Turek on The Last Word: "Iowans are Ready for Change"
Paid for by Josh Turek for Iowavideo · 0:56from 2026-09-22
I think that she's finally recognizing uh what I've been hearing. I've been traveling all around the state for the last 400 days, all 99 counties, and I'm hearing the same thing over and over. It's about cost, corruption, kitchen table issues. Ian's telling me, I want people in DC focusing on lowering grocery prices, on housing prices, on making sure that we've got affordable uh healthcare and affordable pharmaceuticals. I mean, in Iowa alone, just since Ashley Henson has gone up to DC, we have closed 842 healthcare entities. Uh, she's voted for 110,000 Ians to lose their healthcare coverage in a state with a cancer crisis in a healthcare crisis. 119,000 Ians to see their healthcare premiums double or triple. All while she's gotten 15 times more wealthy. Uh, Ians are tired of it. They're ready for change and they're ready for a common sense prairie populace that's going to go up there and fight for them, not for the billionaires and the large corporations.
Bandwagon AppealLoaded LanguageGlittering GeneralitiesCard StackingScapegoatingAppeal to FearExaggeration/HyperboleBlack-and-White FallacyAppeal to Prejudice90.0% of sentences flagged
Bandwagon Appeal: Implies widespread grassroots consensus by emphasizing the speaker has heard the same thing repeatedly across all 99 counties, suggesting universal agreement — for example: all 99 counties, and I'm hearing the same thing over and over and Ians are tired of it.
Loaded Language: The word 'corruption' is emotionally charged and used without specific evidence in this sentence, designed to trigger a negative reaction — for example: corruption, cancer crisis in a healthcare crisis and All while she's gotten 15 times more wealthy.
Glittering Generalities: Vague, broadly appealing policy goals are listed without specifics on how they would be achieved, functioning as rhetorical flourish — for example: lowering grocery prices, on housing prices, on making sure that we've got affordable uh healthcare and affordable pharmaceuticals and common sense prairie populace that's going to go up there and fight for them.
Card Stacking: Attributes the closure of 842 healthcare entities solely to Ashley Henson going to DC, ignoring other systemic or economic factors that may have contributed — for example: just since Ashley Henson has gone up to DC, we have closed 842 healthcare entities
Scapegoating: Blames a single individual (Ashley Henson) for a complex systemic healthcare decline — for example: just since Ashley Henson has gone up to DC, we have closed 842 healthcare entities and she's voted for 110,000 Ians to lose their healthcare coverage.
Appeal to Fear: Invokes a 'cancer crisis' and 'healthcare crisis' alongside large numbers of people losing coverage to generate anxiety and alarm — for example: a state with a cancer crisis in a healthcare crisis
Exaggeration/Hyperbole: Claiming premiums will 'double or triple' for 119,000 people is an extreme claim presented without sourcing or qualification — for example: healthcare premiums double or triple
Black-and-White Fallacy: Presents only two options: fighting for ordinary people or fighting for billionaires and corporations, with no middle ground — for example: fight for them, not for the billionaires and the large corporations
Appeal to Prejudice: The phrase 'common sense prairie populace' invokes a regional in-group identity to contrast with out-group elites (billionaires, corporations) — for example: common sense prairie populace

JOSH TUREK: FOR ILLEGALS, NOT IOWA

Exaggeration/HyperboleName CallingLoaded LanguageAppeal to PrejudiceCard StackingAppeal to FearRepetition87.5% of sentences flagged
Exaggeration/Hyperbole: The claim of 'most controlled border ever in history' is an absolute superlative that overstates the situation without evidence — for example: most controlled border we've ever had in the history and Turick was even caught telling illegal immigrants how to obstruct law enforcement.
Name Calling: The term 'illegals' is a derogatory label used to dehumanize a group rather than use neutral terminology — for example: amnesty for illegals, cracking down on illegals and Liberal politician Josh Turick.
Loaded Language: The word 'amnesty' carries strong negative emotional connotations in immigration debates, designed to trigger a reaction — for example: supports amnesty for illegals, taxpayer-funded welfare benefits to illegal immigrants and fundamentally wrong and un-American.
Appeal to Prejudice: Framing Turick as a 'liberal politician' supporting 'illegals' exploits in-group/out-group identity to stoke resentment — for example: 'liberal politician Josh Turick supports amnesty for illegals'
Card Stacking: This quote is presented without context or the full policy argument, selectively framing Turick's position to make it appear extreme — for example: We need an easier pathway to citizenship and said cracking down on illegals was fundamentally wrong and un-American.
Appeal to Fear: Invoking 'taxpayer-funded welfare benefits to illegal immigrants' is designed to create anxiety about economic harm to citizens — for example: voted to give taxpayer-funded welfare benefits to illegal immigrants and telling illegal immigrants how to obstruct law enforcement.
Repetition: The label 'liberal politician' is repeated alongside Turick's name to reinforce a negative association through familiarity — for example: Liberal politician Josh Turick and Fundamentally wrong and un-American.

I can tell you that social security is
an earned benefit. Pre- Social Security, we had nearly
70% of our seniors in this country living in abject poverty. And I really
believe that one of the best ways to keep Social Security solvent is we have
to remove the cap. I think that yes, I think that it is absolutely ridiculous
that individuals like Bill Gates and Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos pay social
security tax for the first few minutes of the year. But we have teachers and
police officers and nurses that are paying year round. In the US Senate, I
give you my pledge. I'm going to do everything I can to protect health care,
to protect our seniors, uh to protect social security.

Glittering Generalities: The term 'underdog' is used as a positive identity label to evoke sympathy and admiration without substantive policy content — for example: underdog and I'll never stop fighting to make it right.

Appeal to Fear: Vivid scenarios of people losing health insurance and cancer patients being forced to travel hours for care are presented to create anxiety and emotional urgency — for example: 'cancer patients have to travel hours for care because the clinic closed'.
Appeal to Prejudice: Invoking 'Iowa families' as a specific in-group to signal shared identity and imply the speaker uniquely understands and represents them — for example: 'exactly what it means for Iowa families'.
Slogans: Catchy phrase used to compress a complex position into an emotionally loaded shorthand.

I didn’t win the genetic lottery.
My dad served in Vietnam. He was exposed to Agent Orange there, which caused my disability.
But in other ways, I've been very lucky.
🏅 20 years as an athlete
🏛️ 4 years fighting for Iowans in the State House
🗳️ Now the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate
I’m TIED with my MAGA opponent in a race that will decide who controls the Senate. But dark money super PACs have committed to spending over $50 million to keep this seat red.
I don't take corporate PAC money. I count on friends and neighbors like you.
Will you chip in $29.10 — that's my campaign's average digital donation — to help us win in November?

Ashley Hinson's net worth has increased up to 8 million since she went to Congress. >> Coincidence? Come on. >> Nah. Hinson wrote a special tax break that benefits her own family's business, and she holds up to 5 million in stock, despite telling Iowans she sold off her stocks. And don't forget the millions she raised from corporate PACs and lobbyists after voting repeatedly to let them rip off Iowans. >> Coincidence? Come on. >> I'm Josh Turek, and I approve this message.
Card StackingConspiracy AppealLoaded LanguageAppeal to PrejudiceRepetition83.3% of sentences flagged
Card Stacking: Presents the net worth increase as inherently suspicious without providing context about whether this is unusual for members of Congress or what the baseline was — for example: net worth has increased up to 8 million since she went to Congress, despite telling Iowans she sold off her stocks and millions she raised from corporate PACs and lobbyists after voting repeatedly to let them rip off Iowans.
Conspiracy Appeal: The rhetorical question implies a hidden corrupt arrangement rather than coincidence, nudging the audience toward a conspiratorial interpretation — for example: Coincidence? Come on..
Loaded Language: The phrase 'special tax break' is emotionally charged to imply corrupt self-dealing rather than neutral legislative action — for example: special tax break that benefits her own family's business and rip off Iowans.
Appeal to Prejudice: Frames the issue as corporate outsiders harming 'Iowans' as an in-group, exploiting local identity to stoke resentment — for example: 'rip off Iowans'
Repetition: The exact rhetorical question 'Coincidence? Come on.' is repeated verbatim to reinforce the conspiratorial implication through familiarity — for example: repeated use of 'Coincidence? Come on.'

MAJOR UPDATE: Cook Political Report just moved my U.S. Senate race in Iowa from "Lean Republican" to "Toss-Up." But Cook also gave us a dire warning:
"Turek needs to raise more money if this is going to remain a top-tier opportunity for Democrats."

Don't let MAGA billionaires drown us out. Rush $2, $10, $20 or more so I can compete and WIN this toss-up race in November.

It’s Josh Turek, Democratic nominee for Iowa’s U.S. Senate seat. I went through some truly brutal things as a kid — almost 2 dozen surgeries before I was a teenager, bullying at school, and long months in the hospital.
Those experiences made me the man I am today.
A man who’s tough enough to face MAGA billionaires head-on and come out on top.
A man with the mental strength & character to win a toss-up race no one thought I could win.
I’ve beaten the odds a million times before. Together, we can do it again at the ballot box this November.
My campaign is 100% grassroots-powered, so I’m calling on you to back me up today. Chip in to help me flip Iowa’s Senate seat and take back the Senate.

It’s Josh Turek. My race for U.S. Senate in Iowa could clinch the Senate majority for Democrats – that’s why pundits are calling Iowa the “center of the political universe”.
Multiple polls have me tied with my MAGA opponent. Cook Political Report rates this race a Toss-Up.
And we got here without taking a dime from corporate PACs.
Republicans finally realize they could actually lose this seat, so they’re resorting to their usual tricks:
Spending billionaires’ money to spread lies about me.
The stakes are already sky-high — the Senate majority is on the line.

It’s Democrat Josh Turek. I’ll tell you what this little birdie told me:
The Swamp is in panic mode.
A Republican-linked super PAC just committed another $4 million to keep this toss-up seat RED.
That brings MAGA’s planned spend in Iowa to $55 MILLION.
$55 million.
It would take a working Iowan multiple lifetimes to earn that much cold, hard cash.
But to the billionaires and mega-corporations trying to buy this election for my opponent, it’s water off a duck’s back.
We can't let them buy this seat or the U.S. Senate. This fight belongs to working people. But I don’t take corporate PAC money, so we’ll need a LOT of grassroots contributions to get the job done.
In other words...we have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet. 🍳
$4 million is a little steep, but if you can spare just $4, will you chip in towards my FEC End-of-Quarter goal before September 30th?

We’re counting on your support to win Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat and take back the Senate majority.

It used to be that reaching across the aisle wasn’t just okay, it was expected.
Some people in Washington forgot that. I never have.
That’s why I worked with Democrats to expand mental healthcare for veterans and with President Trump to take on big health insurance companies to lower your costs.
Working across the aisle isn’t always easy, but it’s how you get results.

Instead of typing out 500 words to explain my winning record and plans for the future, I think I summed it up pretty well in that sketch!
1 Paralympic bronze medal. 2 gold medals. But winning a place in the United States Senate will be the most rewarding victory of my life.
Before I get ahead of myself, there are a few smaller wins I need to secure first.
• Hitting my weekly fundraising goal
• Filing a killer end-of-quarter FEC report
• Keeping my TV ads on the air
• Reaching every on-the-fence voter in Iowa
My opponents have $55 million to spend against me before November, but I refuse to let them psych me out.
My head is fully, 100% in the game.
I can’t pull off this epic upset victory without you.
Will you chip in $5 or more to help me clinch this seat AND the Senate majority?

I’ve won two elections in the reddest district represented by a Democrat in Iowa in 2024.
I even outperformed the top of the ticket by double digits in 2024.
It took months of dragging my wheelchair up porch steps to talk to voters, but it was worth every ounce of sweat and energy.
I’m using that tactic on a bigger scale in my toss-up U.S. Senate race. That’s how we took this race from “sure thing” for the GOP to “coin flip.”
But getting my message out to voters — and countering the lies MAGA is spreading about me — takes resources.
I don’t take corporate PAC money. I need your grassroots support to defy the odds and win this race.
Will you chip in $5 to fuel my face-to-face campaign through Election Day?

While Americans clip coupons, the Swamp gets richer and richer.
My MAGA opponent Ashley Hinson is up to TEN TIMES richer than she was the day she was sworn into Congress just six years ago.
Sounds a LOT like corruption to me.
I’m not a millionaire like Ashley. I don’t take corporate PAC money and I won’t sell out to special interests. But the Swamp is spending at least $55 million to distract from her corruption and take me down.
They don’t want a senator who’s a fighter.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to flip Iowa’s U.S. Senate seat – but only if folks like you step up and pitch in.
Will you rush $10 to help me crush my FEC end-of-quarter goal and take back this seat for working people?

Loaded Language: The term 'the Swamp' is a politically charged label used to evoke corruption and elitism rather than identify a specific group — for example: 'the Swamp gets richer and richer'
Appeal to Prejudice: The sentence contrasts 'Americans' (ordinary, virtuous in-group) with 'the Swamp' (corrupt out-group), exploiting in-group/out-group identity to generate resentment — for example: 'While Americans clip coupons, the Swamp gets richer and richer'
Exaggeration/Hyperbole: The phrase 'richer and richer' is an extreme overstatement implying unlimited, unchecked wealth accumulation without evidentiary support — for example: 'the Swamp gets richer and richer'
Glittering Generalities: Uses vague, positively framed language about refusing corporate money to imply moral purity without substantive policy detail — for example: 'won't sell out to special interests'

Appeal to Fear: Creates anxiety that powerful forces are actively working to destroy the speaker, pressuring the audience to rally in support — for example: 'take me down'
False Urgency: The phrase 'once-in-a-generation opportunity' creates artificial time pressure implying that failure to act immediately will result in a permanently missed chance — for example: once-in-a-generation opportunity

We can win Iowa’s U.S. Senate seat.
But Ashley Hinson has a serious cash advantage, the support of the richest man on Earth, AND she’s spreading straight-up lies about Josh to downplay her own corruption.
If we’re going to win this race and take back the Senate majority, we need to have the resources to fight back.
Digital ads are a key part of our victory plan. They allow us to reach swing voters without taking corporate PAC money.

President Obama had an important message to share during our recent 1v1 basketball game.
“The ball’s in your court, Iowa.”
My race for U.S. Senate in Iowa could decide whether Democrats take back the majority, or if MAGA will control Capitol Hill for years to come. It’ll shape the future of Iowa and America. And it’ll probably come down to just a few thousand votes.
I’m no stranger to a close race. I won my first State House race in a deep-red district by just six votes – six! So when I say every vote, every door knocked, and every grassroots contribution could make the difference, I mean it.
But to be candid with you, we don’t have the financial high ground. My campaign doesn’t take corporate PAC money, and we’re up against a $50 million MAGA war chest. Communicating statewide takes a big bite out of our budget.
Your small-dollar donations fill that gap by funding our digital and TV ads, canvassing, mail, phone banking, and so much more.
So please, will you join Team Turek and chip in today?

President Obama and I shot a few hoops while we talked about Iowa, the campaign we’re building, and why my race for U.S. Senate is so important for the future of Iowa and the entire country.
The President’s support means the world to me. He knows firsthand what happens when Iowans with a little bit of hope come together. I’m proud to have him in our corner.

One of the things I'm the most proud of is I've always voted my district, voted my conscience. [music] I've been one of the most bipartisan members. Is this good [music] for the people? >> Is it good idea? >> Is this good for the people of Iowa? And and look, if if if a Republican has an idea and we can work together, I was always willing to do the work behind the scenes. Take my name off of a bill, you can run it, you can do it. Josh Turek: "I will always fight to protect Social Security"
Paid for by Josh Turek for Iowavideo · 0:48from 2026-09-09
I want to make sure that every single American senior can afford their medication. This is the best way that we provide access. Unfortunately, since my opponent, Ashley Hinson, has gone up to DC, we have closed 842 healthcare entities in the state. It's fun This isn't a state with a healthcare crisis, a mental health crisis, and a cancer crisis. Voting to cut healthcare, the downstream effects are less services, less supports, less facilities. This is fundamentally wrong. I give each and every Iowa senior my pledge. I will do everything I can to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, and expand it for all of you. >> Yes. >> [applause]

Uh, cancer is something that's really personal to me. Uh, I lost my grandmother to pancreatic cancer, one of the most horrific experiences that, uh, I've ever seen someone go through. Uh, my father was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. And it was due to his exposure to Agent Orange was, uh, the reason why I ended up with my, uh, disability. And because of his exposure to Agent Orange, he's dealt with several bouts of cancer, uh, throat cancer, skin cancer. And nearly the day that I launched my campaign, my sister was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. And like far too many Islands that far too many of you. And she has private insurance. And her private insurance said to her, "Because you have stage two, not stage three or stage four, uh, we will not cover the PET scan to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of your body." So, cancer has been something that is, uh, touched my life and I care very deeply about it. So, I've been doing this for more than a year. I've gone to all 99 counties, lots and lots of communities. I think there's only a handful of issues that is unanimously agreed upon. One, I think that now regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, Iowans are recognizing that the health care system is fundamentally broken. And I have yet to find anyone to disagree with me when I say that we need to put guardrails on insurance companies because doctors should be deciding care, not insurance companies. This situation is like what happened to my sister. I also think that one of the other thing is unanimously agreed upon is that we have a water quality crisis that is leading to a cancer crisis and that we have to have individuals both at the state level and at the federal level that are willing to really do the work to address this in a bipartisan fashion. And so that is my that is my pledge to each and every one of you that going up there, this is going to be one of my absolute number one priorities.

Josh Turek on Pod Save America: "Iowans Are Struggling"
Paid for by Josh Turek for Iowavideo · 1:56from 2026-08-28
Regardless of where I am in the state of Iowa, urban areas, rural areas, I keep hearing the exact same story. Which is Iowans are struggling just to keep food on the table, a roof above their head, um pay their electric bill, and now with this war in Iran, uh be able to put gas in their tank. I think that the uh a couple things. Iowa is we've basically hit the bottom. We're one of three states already seeing our economy contract. We're basically dead last for every health care metric. Uh just since Ashley Hinson's been elected, 842 health care entities have closed in Iowa. And she's voting for cuts to health care. I mean, 110,000 Iowans are going to lose their health care outright because of her votes. 119,000 Iowans seeing their health care premiums double or triple, or horror stories like I've heard, quadruple. Uh we're we're a state that we were basically the gold standard in public education. We've precipitously dropped down from the gold standard, now down to the to the bottom half because of giving private schools public money. We've got a water quality crisis that's not being addressed. We've got a cancer crisis. We have We're the basically the only state with a growing cancer rate, second highest rates behind Kentucky. And now we lead the nation in farm foreclosures, largely driven by the tariffs. But also, I think this war in Iran, which Ashley Hinson has voted in favor of continuing six times, four times in favor of the tariffs. >> [snorts] >> Uh it it is disproportionately hurt Iowa. We've lost three Iowans in the conflict. And then you're looking at this driving up fuel cost, fertilizer cost, and uh and diesel cost, which is disproportionately hurting hurting the farm communities. This is a state that is really hurting, that is ready for change. Everywhere that we're going, people are saying to me, "This is not the Iowa I know. This is not the state that I grew up in. We need change both at the state level and the federal level." And I think that a common sense prairie populist like myself uh is is where they're willing to to park their votes. But it's a state that's ready for change.

Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, who despite campaigning explicitly to quote fight special interests, has reportedly engaged in some questionable behavior with her husband, an insurance executive who chairs a national insurance trade association and lobbying group. Notice reports today that Hinson's husband helped arrange meetings with her and other Iowa congressional delegation members. The political action committee of that group also made gave Hinson more than $67,000. So, Josh, I know you've seen the report. Uh what's your reaction to it? >> And it's good to see you again, Jen. Uh it's crazy. And what's what's even crazier is that this type of activity is legal. Uh it should not be legal to have a spouse working as a shadow lobbyist as a sitting member of Congress. Uh it should not be legal to be able to make yourself 10 times more wealthy in just 6 years up there in DC. Both of which Ashley Hinson has done now. Uh this is why we need change. I want to go up to DC to address the corruption that we're seeing uh from both parties. Uh we need to have term limits. We need to ban members of Congress from owning and trading stocks. And if you're ready to help, join us, uh go to turkforiowa.com and help us uh fight this corruption.

My race for U.S. Senate in Iowa could clinch the Senate majority for Democrats.
Multiple polls have me tied with my MAGA-backed opponent in the fight to replace Joni Ernst – and we got here without taking a dime from corporate PACs.
Republicans are starting to realize they could actually lose this seat, so they’re resorting to their usual attacks.
The cost of this race will only continue to skyrocket, but the stakes are already sky-high.
I’d be so grateful if you could pitch in just $5 to help me flip Iowa — the state experts are calling “the center of the political universe” — this November.

Name Calling: The label 'liberal politician' is used as a derogatory tag to prime the audience negatively before presenting the accusation — for example: liberal politician Josh Turek and Liberal politician Josh Turek.
Card Stacking: Selectively highlights emotionally resonant vote categories (veterans, schools) to maximize negative impression while omitting context about why votes were missed or what other votes Turek did cast — for example: 'Votes to help veterans and fund schools'
Appeal to Prejudice: Invoking veterans and schools appeals to widely shared in-group values to stoke resentment against Turek — for example: 'Votes to help veterans and fund schools'
Loaded Language: The phrase 'taxpayer-funded paycheck' is emotionally charged to trigger resentment by implying Turek is taking money from ordinary citizens without earning it — for example: 'full taxpayer-funded paycheck'

Josh Turek is a Threat to Iowa Farms
Paid for by NRSCvideo · 0:30from 2026-08-19
Josh Turek is a threat to Iowa farmers. Turek wants to impose crushing taxes on every Iowa family farm. In the legislature, he skips nearly 75% of votes on agriculture bills, including the Iowa Farm Act. When he did show up, he stood with climate activists to fight for things like imitation meat products, frivolous lawsuits, and radical California regulations. Josh Turek already failed Iowa farmers once. We can't let him fail them again.

Loaded Language: The word 'threat' is emotionally charged and designed to trigger fear rather than convey a factual claim — for example: is a threat to Iowa farmers, crushing taxes and frivolous lawsuits.

Appeal to Prejudice: Invoking 'Iowa family farm' appeals to in-group identity and rural values to stoke resentment against Turek — for example: every Iowa family farm and radical California regulations.
Card Stacking: Selectively presents the attendance statistic to damage Turek's image without providing context such as reasons for absences or overall voting record — for example: 'skips nearly 75% of votes on agriculture bills.'
Name Calling: Labeling associates as 'climate activists' is used as a derogatory label to discredit Turek by association rather than address the substance of the policies — for example: 'stood with climate activists.'

What this page is
An ad is on this page because its own "Paid for by" line is a campaign in this race; or it comes from a national Senate group and ran mostly in IA; or it ran mostly in IA and names a candidate — unless its sponsor is a campaign for some other office. Ads from outside groups appear alongside the campaigns' own.
Campaigns run one text as many separate ads. Identical text from the same sponsor is one card here, marked with its number of variants.
A technique is a specific manipulative move in the wording, found by our model and explained in one line. It is not a claim that the ad is false.
Claims are checked when a reader asks: press "Check this ad's claims" on a card. The check runs once and its result is shown to everyone afterwards. The ten ads with the most money behind them in each race are checked ahead of time.
Claim verdicts say what the cited sources say. A verdict that an ad is wrong or misleading is shown only when it cites an established fact-checker or an institutional record — Congress, a federal agency, a court — and its confidence is not low; a weaker one is not shown at all. Each verdict shows what it rests on and how confident it is. If we got one wrong, press Disagree: a verdict that readers dispute and no one defends comes down.
Video ads come from the campaigns' own YouTube channels; the transcript is analyzed. Meta ads are analyzed on their text; their video and images are not, yet.
