Read this before comparing the sides. Ads that attack an opponent use these techniques far more often than ads that introduce a candidate, whoever runs them, so the side running more attack ads shows a higher share. A technique is about wording, not about whether an ad is true. These are online ads only (Meta and YouTube), not television.

How a group is placed: by its own filings with the Federal Election Commission. A group is with a candidate when it reported spending to support that candidate, or to oppose the other one in the general election. The parties' own committees are with their nominee. Spending against a candidate in a primary places a group nowhere, and neither does our reading of its ads: a group with no such filing is listed as not placed. The sponsor table gives the reason for each.

Decide what counts

Not everyone would call every technique a problem. Untick the ones you'd call ordinary persuasion and the count updates.

32% of the 887 ads here use at least one of the techniques ticked below (287 ads).

Leaving out the softer ones (loaded language, glittering generalities, slogans, exaggeration, repetition): 18% of ads.

Money in this race

From FEC filings for 2025–26. Outside spending is money a group spends on its own about a candidate — TV and online ads, mail, canvassing. It is not a donation to the campaign, and the candidate does not control it. Supporting means it was spent to help that candidate win; Opposing means it was spent to defeat them, usually on attack ads. Groups report it within 24 or 48 hours as the election nears. Raised is the campaign's own fundraising, as of its latest quarterly report. Largest donors come from each outside spender's own FEC receipts, with each donor's share of its itemized receipts; donors under $100,000 are not named. People are shown with the employer and occupation they reported. A donor that is itself a political committee is shown with its own largest donors. Companies and nonprofits don't report their funders to the FEC, so the trail ends there, and the page says so.

If I was Susan Collins, I'd be worried too.

Looks like there's a lot of Jackson signs around. Do you think that Susan Collins is worried? Well, with her record, I'd be worried, too. Let's go win this thing, Maine. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go.

Our Time

Paid for by Troy Jackson for Mainevideo · 1:34from 2026-11-03
I went home and course Senator Collins showed up in their bus that she shows up in every six years. And I started seeing these signs along the road which I you know I've seen for 30 years. Saying you know Susan Collins our Senator. Well, there's nobody that I know that feels that way. You know I mean not nobody that I know. But I stopped to a restaurant and somebody was expressing that to me and they said you know what you should be talking about and I said well what's that? He said you should be talking about how it's our time. So much of my life I've regretted not being able to spend time with my own sons. I don't know if that's how the world goes or not. You know that idea that you know we can have a government that everyday people can maybe just slow down for a minute. You know maybe can spend time with their their kids. Maybe spend time with their family, their their parents. You know it shouldn't be too much to ask. It really shouldn't have you know a health care system that works for everyone. You know imagine that and and the idea that you know wealthy people in Congress will stand up on the Senate floor or House floor or same thing in the Maine legislature and decide who in this country is worthy of government sponsored health care. Well, they all have government sponsored health care. There's always money for bombs. There's always money for income tax cuts. There's always money for other things but there's never any money for the everyday people and that's what this race for me is about. I mean I've been hoping for a long time that somebody would be able to do it. But I can tell you right now that I'm damn well going to do it.

Rising

Oh, yeah. I mean, frustration, I I understand that. I have that with myself. I'm mad at the government. Yeah, I mean, we just don't have a lot of opportunity now. 596,000 votes for Troy Jackson. Well, this economy is not just about taking our money. It is about taking pieces of our lives away from us. I know when you're working-class person how getting on the line is a real challenge. You don't have a lot, but what you have, you can't afford to lose. I am seeing something now that I've been waiting so damn long for. I've seen packed rooms like this from one end of the state to the other. I've seen people who haven't been involved in politics before showing up now. We are the ones that built this country. We are the ones that's always put our blood, sweat, and tears on the line. And and all those billionaires, we made them that money. Susan Collins needs to come out and hear that. She needs to listen to us. Because somebody who worked their entire life to make people billionaires shouldn't have to punch another clock at 70 years old just to survive in this economy. Maine deserves a senator who works for Maine, not just those at the top. BECAUSE WE'RE NOT FROM THE LEFT, we're not from the right, we're from the bottom, and we are rising. I owe Donald Trump nothing. I owe the billionaires nothing. I owe the people of Maine everything.

I wouldn’t buy a cord of wood from Susan Collins...

Paid for by Troy Jackson for Mainevideo · 0:34from 2026-10-30
Susan Collins and her wealthy friends think I'm good enough to buy a cord of firewood from, but I'm not good enough to be the next US senator. They say I don't have the tools. But look, Susan Collins tools are super PACs that are bankrolled by billionaires, dark money lobbyists, and shell companies. So look, I've never needed tools like that. I like my chainsaw and my splitting mall just fine. Where I'm from, you don't buy wood from people that break their word, screw people over, and cheat. I sure as hell wouldn't buy a c of wood from Susan Collins. And I sure as hell wouldn't send her back to the US Senate.

TROY JACKSON CAN'T DELIVER FOR MAINE

Paid for by Senate Leadership Fundvideo · 0:30from 2026-10-29
Democrats struggle to defend his unhinged behavior. Has Troy lost his temper now and then? Sure. He doesn't lose his temper in a gendered way. He doesn't lose his temper with women anymore than he loses his temper with men. He tries to get his way by screaming and throwing. His colleagues reported him to the governor. With everyone watching, he can't even get through a debate without an outburst. This creep can't deliver for Maine. SLF PAC is responsible for the content of this advertising.

Loaded Language: The emotionally charged word 'unhinged' paints the person's behavior as irrational rather than describing specific actions.

Exaggeration/Hyperbole: Overstates the person's behavior as an absolute inability to complete any debate without an outburst. Flagged: “he can't even get through a debate without an outburst”.

Name Calling: Uses a derogatory label to discredit the person instead of addressing his record or arguments. Flagged: “This creep”.

Troy Jackson, "Heart"

Paid for by Troy Jackson for Mainevideo · 0:30from 2026-10-27
This November, Mainers will decide the direction of this whole country. Is it for the billionaires and Trump, or everyday people like us? We can protect Social Security, get people healthcare, and keep more of what we earn. It won't be easy, but I've learned if your heart is in the right place, you can make things better. I owe nothing to the billionaires or Trump. I owe everything to the people of Maine. That's what's in my heart. I'm Troy Jackson. I approve this message, and I'd be honored to have your vote.

Exaggeration/Hyperbole: Overstates the influence of a single state's vote by claiming it decides the direction of the entire country. Flagged: “Mainers will decide the direction of this whole country”.

Black-and-White Fallacy: Frames the choice as only two options, billionaires and Trump versus everyday people, ignoring any other position. Flagged: “Is it for the billionaires and Trump, or everyday people like us?”.

Glittering Generalities: Offers vague, appealing promises without specifics on how they would be achieved. Flagged: “protect Social Security, get people healthcare, and keep more of what we earn”.

Sen. Susan Collins claims she brings money to Maine, but her actions prove otherwise. One of her votes lost us $675 million and her support of Trump’s budget bill last year cost Maine $4.125 billion in cuts to health care, nutrition assistance, and clean energy investments over the next ten years. And while everyday Mainers have been struggling to get by, Collins has been handing out tax breaks to billionaires and wealthy corporations.

!!️On Wednesday, Donald Trump made clear he is in Susan Collins’ corner. AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM WITH SUSAN COLLINS!!️ Does Maine REALLY Want a Trump Supporter in the Senate when what America needs are strong checks and balances on what is clearly emerging as an unbalanced president❓❓ 💥Just days after she attended a clandestine meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Trump and other Republican congressional members. Collins emerged from that meeting ready to rubber-stamp the most radical and unqualified nominees Trump has ever put forth. 🔥🔥The meeting was orchestrated by Trump’s inner circle, including Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and MAGA strategist Steve Bannon, both known for their roles in dismantling democratic institutions. ⚫️⚫️⚫️Collins subsequently voted shockingly to confirm Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence and, even more shockingly, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). In both cases she was promised things, and in both cases the promises were not kept...no surprise to most, given the history of the candidates. AND THAT'S THE RUB. Collins is not a far-right nutcase, let's concede that. She asks questions and sometimes votes no on a Trump issue. ✅But when the rubber hits the road, meetings with the radical "higher-ups" can turn her, because she believes people....EVEN WHEN THEY DON'T DESERVE IT OR HAVEN'T EARNED IT. Put indelicately, she appears to get rolled by people who aren't exactly truthful. And we've all seen how that has happened not just once, but many times now. IT'S THE JOB OF TRUE PATRIOTS AT THIS POINT TO MAKE SURE THAT STOPS HAPPENING WITH THIS ADMINISTRATION.🚫🚫🚫 In this environment, Maine needs someone a little less soft and pliable, and who is a lot more reliable check and balance on a far-right juggernaut filled with some obviously unqualified people. IT'S TIME FOR A FIGHTER. 🟦 Susan Collins has done a lot for Maine, let's give her that. But her approach now, in a sea of unreliable characters surrounding her, may hurt Maine and surely has already hurt the country. It's time to thank her for her service, and time to beef up the checks and balances on President Trump. 🔷🔷Thanks for your service, Susan Collins. You've done your best. But it's now a different time, and that means a vote for Troy Jackson, the FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE MAINE SENATE. Experienced in politics and ready for Washington, D.C.🔷🔷

Name Calling: Labels the president 'unbalanced' to discredit him rather than addressing specific arguments.

Loaded Language: Emotionally charged emphasis and rhetorical framing ('REALLY', double question marks, 'clearly emerging') push a reaction rather than convey facts.

Black-and-White Fallacy: Frames the choice as either a Trump supporter or checks and balances, ignoring other possibilities. Flagged: “a Trump Supporter in the Senate when what America needs are strong checks and balances”.

Conspiracy Appeal: Describing a meeting as 'clandestine' implies secret, hidden coordination without evidence.

Exaggeration/Hyperbole: The absolute superlative claims these are the worst nominees ever, beyond what evidence supports. Flagged: “the most radical and unqualified nominees Trump has ever put forth”.

Bandwagon Appeal: Implies that everyone shares the same observation, so the claim must be true. Flagged: “we've all seen how that has happened not just once, but many times now”.

Glittering Generalities: Uses the vague, positive label 'true patriots' as a rhetorical flourish to define who is virtuous and what they must do.

False Urgency: Frames the moment as demanding immediate action to prevent further harm. Flagged: “AT THIS POINT TO MAKE SURE THAT STOPS HAPPENING”.

🚨 Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) is backing a requirement that first-time voters show proof of U.S. citizenship while drawing a clear line against mail-in ballot restrictions she says would burden seniors. Speaking on the campaign trail, Collins said she supports the SAVE Act provision for new registrants, stating: "Only Americans should be voting in American elections." Collins said she opposes a proposed U.S. Postal Service rule that would refuse to deliver absentee ballots in states that have not turned over raw voter rolls to federal authorities, citing concerns about access for Maine's large senior population. She drew a distinction between the two measures, framing the SAVE Act's citizenship check as a one-time, non-burdensome step for first-time registrants only. Collins became the 50th Republican senator to back the SAVE Act (HR 22), which passed the House 218-213 but faces long odds in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to advance. Maine voters rejected a referendum requiring photo ID at the polls last November by a margin of 64% to 36%, and Gov. Janet Mills said Collins "caved" to President Trump and is "supporting efforts to rig the rules and silence voters." Collins is the only Republican senator seeking re-election in a state carried by then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024. Do you think requiring proof of citizenship for first-time voter registration is a reasonable safeguard or an unnecessary barrier? 👇 #SAVEAct #SusanCollins #VoterID #Maine #ElectionIntegrity #Breaking

🚨 Maine Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Troy Jackson says he wishes Graham Platner had remained in the race, telling interviewers: "I wish things would have continued, it would have been much better." Platner, a veteran and oyster farmer, had won Maine's Democratic primary in June with more than 70% of the vote before formally withdrawing from the race. The Maine Secretary of State's office confirmed receipt of his official notice of withdrawal. Hours after Platner's exit, the Maine Democratic Party held a convention of 601 delegates and selected Jackson, the former Maine Senate President, as their new nominee. Jackson will now face longtime Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins in one of the most closely watched Senate races of the fall election. During the primary, Jackson and Platner frequently campaigned together and cross-endorsed each other. What do you think: does Jackson's support for Platner change how you view this race? 👇 #MaineSenate #TroyJackson #GrahamPlatner #SusanCollins #Maine2026 #Breaking

🚨 Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has acknowledged that noncitizens are likely registered to vote in the state, saying in a recorded interview: "I'm sure there are, in some isolated instances, some noncitizens on the rolls." The comment, made during a YouTube interview with Democratic election lawyer Marc Elias, was highlighted by The Maine Wire amid renewed national scrutiny of voter registration systems. Maine relies on an honor-based system to prevent noncitizens from registering to vote. The disclosure comes as Bellows faces separate federal pressure over voter roll transparency. The Department of Justice sued Maine in September 2025 after Bellows' office refused to provide complete copies of the state's voter registration rolls, and the RNC filed a complaint with Attorney General Pam Bondi alleging violations of the National Voter Registration Act. Campaign finance records also show Bellows paid Marc Elias, the lawyer who conducted the interview, at least $12,000 in campaign expenditures. Bellows is currently running for governor. The Maine Wire previously reported in October 2024 that it identified six noncitizens registered to vote in Maine, five of whom had cast ballots in prior elections. A recent New Jersey disclosure, that a software error erroneously registered 6,600 noncitizens to vote, has amplified scrutiny of state voter roll maintenance nationwide. 👇 What changes, if any, should Maine make to its voter registration verification process? #Maine #ElectionIntegrity #VoterRolls #ShennaLellows #MainePolitics #Breaking

🚨 Maine Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Troy Jackson says he supports Medicare for All and has championed the policy for years, describing the health care industry as a "monopoly" that needs to be addressed. Jackson, a former president of the Maine State Senate and Aroostook County native, said he and former Democratic primary winner Graham Platner were closely aligned on policy: "Me and Graham were pretty aligned on our policies. I believe Medicare for all, I've been fighting for that forever." Jackson cited his proximity to Canada and family ties there as personal context for his longstanding support of a universal health care system. Jackson was formally nominated at a state Democratic convention in Bangor on July 25, 2026, after Platner, who had won the June 9 Democratic primary, exited the race. Jackson is now the Democratic nominee challenging longtime Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins in one of the most closely watched U.S. Senate races of the fall midterm cycle. What do you think: should Medicare for All be a central issue in the Maine Senate race this fall? 👇 #Maine #TroyJackson #MedicareForAll #MaineSenate #SusanCollins #Breaking

What this page is

  • An ad is on this page because its own "Paid for by" line is a campaign in this race; or it comes from a national Senate group and ran mostly in ME; or it ran mostly in ME and names a candidate — unless its sponsor is a campaign for some other office. Ads from outside groups appear alongside the campaigns' own.
  • Campaigns run one text as many separate ads. Identical text from the same sponsor is one card here, marked with its number of variants.
  • A technique is a specific rhetorical move in the wording, found by our model and explained in one line. It is not a claim that the ad is false.
  • Claims are checked when a reader asks: press "Check this ad's claims" on a card. Running a check and seeing its verdicts are part of Semblen Pro, because each check costs money to run; anyone can see which claims an ad makes. The ten ads with the most money behind them in each race are checked ahead of time.
  • Claim verdicts say what the cited sources say. A verdict that an ad is wrong or misleading is shown only when it cites an established fact-checker or an institutional record — Congress, a federal agency, a court — and its confidence is not low; a weaker one is not shown at all. Each verdict shows what it rests on and how confident it is. If we got one wrong, press Disagree: a verdict that readers dispute and no one defends comes down.
  • Video ads come from the campaigns' own YouTube channels; the transcript is analyzed. Meta ads are analyzed on their text; their video and images are not, yet.
